Your dentist is part of the team too!
Team sports are ubiquitous these days, aren’t they? I hardly know a single family that doesn’t participate in some form or other, spending early mornings at the rink or weekends going to distant pitches in other cities.
There is a whole ‘team’ that helps when a child is participating in sports. Someone buys the equipment. Someone is in charge of snacks. Another is in charge of transportation or organizing hotel rooms. The little sister who gets dragged around to game after game; the big brother who isn’t quite old enough to drive their sibling to the rink yet. There is a fair amount of effort going on in the background, no matter what level of sport a child plays at.
But there is one more team that is part of this group – not one that shows up to every game, but one that is there when you need them most. That’s a ‘health team’ and that team includes your family dentist.
We’re going to take a moment, as we approach the spring season of hockey playoffs and baseball try outs, to remind the ‘family team’ of the importance of protective equipment. Helmets with face protection, mouth guards and more.
A growing child with permanent teeth coming in needs to be protected: not just their heads, but their mouths and teeth as well. The number of oral injuries swells at this time of year, just because of the sheer numbers of kids participating in multiple sports. Of course accidents happen, and we’re here to help if they do, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as Benjamin Franklin so wisely stated: “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.”.
So your ‘health team’ has the cure and the ‘family team’ is responsible for the prevention and together, we can keep our kids happy, healthy and enjoying their activities.
