Are you missing a tooth but haven’t really considered replacing it?
Then consider this: Missing teeth can lead to a host of other problems, including additional tooth loss. Research shows that if a missing tooth is not replaced, up to 20% of adjacent teeth will fall out in the next 4 to 8 years.
Missing teeth also cause remaining teeth to shift, causing spaces between teeth, food impaction, bite collapse, chewing alteration, facial structure and bone deterioration and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain. You’re also more susceptible to gum disease.
Dental implants can help to prevent these issues, as a permanent alternative to more traditional bridges or dentures. They are not an option for everyone, however, so a thorough examination, health history and x-rays are required to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants.
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are metal roots – made from titanium – that are inserted in your jawbone to replace the dental root that would normally be there to hold a tooth in place. An artificial but very realistic tooth is attached to the metal root, which acts as the anchor to hold the new tooth in place. The procedure takes 4 to 6 months in total, as it is done in stages.
What Alternatives Exist to Dental Implants?
Crown and bridgework, partial or full dentures are also available to deal with missing teeth. However, as the most natural prosthetic to natural tooth structure, a dental implant offers a comfortable, natural looking, easy-to-care-for choice.
How Long do Dental Implants Last?
With proper oral care, including daily brushing and flossing, dental implants can last a lifetime. They are as close to natural teeth as you can get with cosmetic replacement.
Can Any Dentist do Implants?
Dental implants are covered as part of the standard curriculum to become a dentist, but Dr. Fahimay Naqvi wanted to extend her understanding of dental implants and pursued a fellowship at the Misch International Implant Institute. Established by Dr. Carl Misch, the Misch International Implant Institute is the gold standard in dental implants.
