Conscious Sedation Dentistry with Nitrous Oxide
Every year millions of Canadians put off needed dental work simply because of their fear of pain. This results in a neglect of Dental Hygiene that can often become problematic over time.
Conscious sedation dentistry using Nitrous oxide or its more common name – ‘Laughing gas’, as a solution to this anxiety and the worry about the pain involved in dental surgery. The use of Nitrous oxide is a proven conscious sedation method that allows patients to go through pain-free dentistry sometimes even without the use of needles.
Nitrous oxide is a mild General Anaesthetic, and under it people tend to experience a state of euphoria, which is why Nitrous Oxide is called the laughing gas! We modulate the gas levels to manage the sedation so that you can have the most comfortable experience in an anxiety-free dental surgery environment.
Will Nitrous oxide sedation put me to sleep?
Nitrous oxide is not a sedative that is intended to put you to sleep. While under sedation with Nitrous oxide you will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions the dentist may have. Your dentist will ask you to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes, you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide.
The goal of using Nitrous oxide is ultimately to make you feel calm and comfortable. Another advantage of Nitrous oxide sedation is that the effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed.
In our office, we administer nitrous oxide to enhance patient comfort and relieve anxiety for patients of all ages. After you’re comfortably seated in the dental chair, you’ll inhale the gas (nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture) through a face mask. We will control the amount of nitrous you receive to ensure your safety. You will begin to relax and will not recognize pain, so the dentist can perform your dental work while you stay completely comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide subside once we remove your mask, so if nitrous is the only anesthesia you receive, you will be capable of driving yourself home following the visit and can continue your daily activities as normal.
