What Are Dental Implants?
In a nutshell, a dental implant is a fake tooth that is secured into the jawbone. The implant consists of the fake tooth (the crown) attached to a post, which is typically made of titanium or some other ceramic materials that do not cause a foreign body reaction. The post is surgically secured into the jawbone and the crown is attached to the post. The end result is a natural looking artificial tooth.
Dental implants are very successful alternatives, with 93 – 98% success rates and lifespans lasting up to 15 years.
Specialized Training
Dental implants are covered as part of the standard curriculum to become a dentist, but Dr. Fahimay Naqvi wanted to extend her understanding of dental implants and pursued a fellowship at the Misch International Implant Institute.
Established by Dr. Carl Misch, the Misch International Implant Institute is the gold standard in dental implants. Dr. Misch is recognized internationally for his clinical and academic contributions to the field of implant dentistry.
Getting Dental Implants
Getting dental implants is a process that usually takes four to six months to complete.
The first step is a consultation, when Dr. Naqvi will assess the patients jawbone to make sure that the bone and the soft tissue that normally surround the teeth are healthy and strong enough to support an implant. If there is any damaged or atrophied bone or tissue then this would need to be removed as to have a solid foundation for the implants.
The first step of implanting the implants is to secure the post into the jaw bone. This surgical procedure is performed in either of Orion Dental’s Milton or Scarborough offices and takes a couple of hours. In the following couple of months the post naturally fuses into the jaw bone.
The second step of implants is to secure the implants to the posts. The posts are uncovered and the implants are connected.
The whole process takes anywhere from four to six months. None of the procedures involved with inserting the posts or attaching the implants is very difficult and most patients do not experience any disruption to their normal daily lives in any way whatsoever. More important, at the end the patient once again has a beautiful smile!
