Having white teeth and a bright smile can not only make you look good, but can be a great boost to your self-confidence. But with coffee, pop and other things that can stain your teeth so much part of our everyday lifestyles, keeping your teeth white can be challenging. Here are some easy teeth whitening tips you can use on a daily basis.
Avoid Teeth Staining Food and Drink
There are the obvious tooth staining culprits: coffee, tea, pop, and red wine. But other foods can also stain teeth but aren’t quite as notorious are dark berries and candy. The natural colouring of dark berries will naturally stain your teeth, while the artificial colouring from candy can also stain your teeth. If you’re eating candy and it changes the colour of your tongue, that same colouring is also going to stain your teeth.
Sports drinks and citrus fruits can also contribute to unsightly stains on your teeth. They can contain high levels of acid that can weaken and erode the enamel on your teeth, making them less resistant to staining.
Brush or Rinse After Each Meal
There is a certain amount of natural and completely normal bacteria in your mouth. These bacteria feed on particles of food left behind in your mouth after you eat. They naturally secrete acid, which causes bad breath but can also weaken the enamel on your teeth, making your teeth less resistant to staining and even prone to cavities.
If possible, you should try and brush your teeth after you eat a meal. By doing so you’ll brush away molecules of food, giving the bacteria in your mouth less to snack on.
If it’s not practical to carry a toothbrush around, rinse your mouth out with water instead. It’s not as good as brushing, but if you can rinse away some of the food particles then your mouth will be that much healthier and your teeth a little bit whiter.
Replace Your ToothBrush & Visit Your Dentist
Toothbrushes don’t last forever – you can generally expect a toothbrush to last about three months depending on the quality of the toothbrush and your brushing habits. If you’re using a lower quality toothbrush or you brush your teeth frequently and vigorously then you should get a new toothbrush more frequently.
It’s no surprise that regular visits to your dentist make our list! Regular dental checkups can keep plaque from building up along your gum lines, between and behind your teeth. Most dentists will polish your teeth as part of a regular checkup, which will help clean out some of those deep stubborn stains that regular brushing might not be able to remove. Also, regular dental checkups gives your dentist a catch potential issues and deal with them before they become serious.
