Happy 2017, everyone! It’s a New Year, so a fresh start to a brand-new year and a time when many people commit (or recommit, or re-recommit!) to New Year’s Resolutions. We thought we’d help you get that beautiful and healthy smile that you’ve always wanted by coming up with some easy-to-do New Year’s resolutions that will give you healthier teeth this year!
New Year’s Resolution 1 – Brush Twice a Day (At Least!)
Brushing twice a day is so important, not just for getting healthier teeth but a healthier mouth in general. Your mouth naturally contains bacteria, and these bacteria consume food particles and produces acids that can weaken the enamel on your teeth, leading to cavities and other tooth issues.
By brushing twice a day, you’re removing the acid that these bacteria produce, but you’re also removing food particles they feast on.
New Year’s Resolution 2 – Floss … Every Day!
We get it, you just don’t like flossing. None of our patients do, really.
But flossing is just as important as brushing because it removes food particles from between the teeth and up along the gum line. Flossing also toughens up your gum line, providing added protection against plaque buildup that can lead to gum disease and weaken enamel.
New Year’s Resolution 3 – Eat Less Sugary Foods!
The favourite snack of the bacteria that naturally occurs in your mouth is sugary foods, so the more sugar you have in your diet the more harmful acids these bacteria produce.
And we’re not just talking about candy, here. We’re talking about the fancy sugary coffees, breakfast cereals, breads, salad dressings and even sushi … sugary foods are just about anywhere you want to look.
Besides, not only will your teeth and mouth thank you, but if you’re looking to shed a few pounds then your waistline will, too!
New Year’s Resolution 4 – Drink More Water
Drinking water can help a couple of different ways.
First, drinking water can help flush harmful acids from your mouth, but can also flush food particles trapped in hard-to-reach areas such as along your gum line and between your teeth.
But drinking lots of water can also help hydrate your body and skin. If you’ve got dry, itchy skin or chapped lips, drinking more water can help get much needed moisture back into your body.
New Year’s Resolution 5 – See Your Dentist Twice a Year!
We know life can get busy, between work, kids and the activities they’re involved in, and taking some well-deserved time for yourself.
But skipping out on regular dentist visits is never a good idea. Your mouth is a very important part of your overall well-being, and your dentist can help keep your mouth healthy, often identifying and addressing issues before they become serious. Commit to seeing your family dentist at least twice this year.
