No, it’s not all floss and new toothbrushes. Well, not ALL…
You probably think that dentists are the Scrooge’s of the Easter season. No candy, no chocolate, all to be replaced by packages of floss, toothbrushes and paste.
It’s true that a healthier approach to treats is always on our radar screen but at the end of the day, treats are just that and indulging once in awhile isn’t going to create profound damage, as long as it’s managed.
With that in mind, here are some do’s and don’ts for this year’s Easter basket:
DO include chocolate but splurge for the higher quality dark chocolate that contains at least 70% cocoa and less sugar than it’s milk counterparts. Or mix it up a little so the kids get a bit of both.
DON’T include hard or chewy candy — the former can cause cracks and chips from kids biting down hard on them and the latter get stuck in every hard to reach groove, to say nothing of the possibility of damaging existing dental work (fillings).
DO include a few toys or books in the basket — non-food options are super fun too.
DON’T forget to remind everyone to rinse with water after eating treats, to help neutralize the sugars and wash away bacteria.
DO focus on spending time with family and friends on the holiday. Get the kids together and do a craft or make a treat that everyone will love! We found a recipe for homemade Peanut Butter Eggs that is just divine, as well as being vegan and gluten free.
You still want to know what’s going in the basket this year at our house?
I’ll tell you, but keep it to yourself: A new book, a wind up bunny toy, a chocolate bunny, an easter egg craft and, yes, a new toothbrush. What? It just happens to be around the three month mark!
