Do I really need to have my teeth cleaned twice a year?
Your dentist says yes. Your co-worker says no. Your insurance tends to agree with your co-worker. We get it: it’s another expense if you don’t have insurance and some policies are stretching the covered visits to every nine months. Historically, the twice a year visit was designed for the ‘average person’: a non-smoker with no major health concerns, who brush and floss regularly.
So how do you decide if twice a year is enough or too much?
It really comes down to the individual. There are times in your life when more frequent visits are warranted, possibly even more than twice a year. There are people with certain diseases or issues who should be seen more regularly. Is that you? Let’s break it down.
Who should see a dentist at least twice a year
- Pretty much everyone but in particular:
Children – particularly as their adult teeth are coming in, to ensure that all is progressing normally. Also, new permanent teeth are more vulnerable to decay and should be cleaned regularly.
Who would benefit from seeing a dentist MORE than twice a year
- People with health conditions that can directly affect oral health or be affected BY oral health – heart disease, for example, can be exacerbated by gum disease. Other situations? Individuals with diabetes, immunocompromised individuals, or people with active gum disease.
- People whose oral health habits are not ideal – those who consume a lot of sugary foods, smoke or otherwise are less inclined to care for their teeth on a regular basis.
It’s clear that there is a strong connection between oral health and your overall health, so ignoring your teeth and gums isn’t in anyone’s best interest.
Cavities, gum disease and oral cancer are all examples of things that are far more manageable if caught in early stages than if left. And don’t wait for pain to be your indicator: oral health issues can be pretty far along before pain starts pushing you towards the dentist chair.
Remember, your dentist can check for problems long before they become a problem – preventive care is much easier to manage. And while you’re in for a cleaning, you can ask about teeth whitening or other cosmetic options that keep your smile healthy and happy too!
