With Halloween just around the corner, we’re very much looking forward to the ghouls and goblins taking to the streets in search of tasty treats. And even though we love a tasty or salty treat as much as the next person, we still want to remind you to take extra special care of your teeth to make sure those tasty treats don’t play unpleasant tricks on your teeth. Bacteria that live in your mouth thrive on the sugary treats of Halloween candy and produce acids that can harm your teeth so it’s extra important that kids (and adults, too!) take good care of their teeth to avoid any problems with tooth decay.
Here are our top five tips for maintaining good dental health this Halloween:
- Brush your teeth at least twice a day – If you’re enjoying some sugary snacks make sure that you’re brushing your teeth in the morning and at night, and even in the middle of the day if you can manage. Staying on top of those acid-producing bacteria is a great way to keep a beautiful healthy smile, keep your breathe fresh and stave off tooth decay.
- Floss at least once a day – Flossing between your teeth gets to those spots that the bristles of your toothbrush just can’t reach. Bacteria love hiding in hard-to-reach places and flossing not only helps get rid of them but it also helps remove plaque and food particles from between the teeth and under the gum line.
- Save your sugary treats for after meals – Eating candy throughout the day means that those bacteria get to feast many times during the day and continually produce harmful acids, which leads to faster tooth decay. Also, saliva levels increase during meals and help neutralize the harmful acids and help flush away food particles.
- Get a new toothbrush regularly – Just like anything else, toothbrushes wear out over time and should be changed at least once every three months. The bristles on a toothbrush break down over time due to normal wear and tear, making them less effective at getting into all those tricky areas around your teeth.
