Teeth Whitening

Professional teeth whitening uses a peroxide-based gel to lighten stains that have built up in tooth enamel over time. It does not change the colour of crowns, veneers, or fillings, results vary from person to person, and temporary sensitivity is common. Orion Dental offers in-office and take-home whitening at our Scarborough and Milton, Ontario offices.

Why Do Teeth Become Discoloured?

Tooth discolouration is a natural process that happens over time. Everyday habits — your morning coffee, a glass of red wine, certain medications — gradually dull your smile. Understanding the causes can help you make informed decisions about whitening and maintaining your results.

There are two main categories of tooth stains. Extrinsic stains affect the outer enamel surface and are caused by coffee, tea, red wine, cola, berries, tomato sauce, and tobacco. These respond best to whitening treatments. Intrinsic stains occur within the tooth structure itself — from medications like tetracycline, excessive fluoride, dental trauma, or natural aging. Intrinsic stains are harder to treat with whitening alone and may require alternatives such as porcelain veneers or cosmetic bonding.

How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

Professional whitening at Orion Dental uses higher concentrations of bleaching agents than over-the-counter products, applied under clinical supervision for safe, consistent results. Here is what the process looks like at our Scarborough and Milton locations:

1

Oral Health Assessment

Your dentist examines your teeth and gums to confirm you are a good candidate. Any existing issues — cavities, gum disease, or worn enamel — are addressed first. A professional cleaning removes surface plaque and tartar so the whitening agent can work effectively.

2

Shade Matching

We record your current tooth shade so you can see a clear before-and-after comparison. Your dentist will discuss realistic expectations based on the type of staining present.

3

Gum Protection

A protective barrier is applied to your gums and soft tissues to prevent contact with the whitening gel, reducing the risk of irritation.

4

Whitening Gel Application

A professional-strength hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel is carefully applied to your teeth. For in-office treatment, the gel may be activated with a special light and applied in multiple rounds over approximately one hour.

5

Results & Aftercare

Your new shade is compared to the original. Your dentist provides aftercare instructions including foods to avoid, sensitivity management tips, and a schedule for touch-up treatments if needed.

How Does Professional Whitening Differ From Over-the-Counter Products?

Over-the-counter whitening products — strips, toothpastes, rinses, and LED kits — are widely available. While they can provide some improvement, professional treatments differ in meaningful ways:

Higher Concentration

Professional whitening uses stronger bleaching agents that produce more noticeable results in less time than drugstore alternatives.

Custom-Fitted Trays

Take-home trays are made from impressions of your teeth, ensuring even gel contact across every surface — no gaps or overlap.

Dentist Supervision

Your dentist evaluates your oral health before treatment and monitors for any complications throughout the process.

Gum Protection

Professional application shields your gums from the bleaching agent, significantly reducing the risk of soft-tissue irritation.

Consistent, Even Results

Clinical application avoids the patchy, uneven whitening that can occur with one-size-fits-all strips or trays.

Longer-Lasting Outcomes

Professional treatments typically last one to three years, especially when paired with custom take-home trays for periodic touch-ups.

What Types of Teeth Whitening Does Orion Dental Offer?

We offer two professional whitening options so you can choose the approach that fits your schedule and preferences:

In-Office Whitening

In-office whitening is performed at our dental office and typically takes about one hour. Your dentist applies a professional-strength whitening gel to your teeth in multiple rounds. Many patients notice a visible difference after a single visit, though how much a person's teeth lighten varies with the type of staining present.

In-office whitening may be ideal if you:

  • Want dramatic results in one appointment
  • Have a wedding, job interview, or special event approaching
  • Prefer professional supervision throughout the process
  • Want a more controlled, even application

Take-Home Whitening Kits

Our take-home kits include custom-fitted trays made from impressions of your teeth and professional-grade whitening gel. You wear the trays for thirty minutes to one hour daily over one to two weeks, whitening gradually at your own pace.

Take-home whitening may be ideal if you:

  • Prefer to whiten on your own schedule
  • Have sensitive teeth and want a gentler, more gradual process
  • Want the convenience of whitening at home
  • Want to reuse the trays for future touch-ups

Sensitivity Tips

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during or after whitening. To minimize discomfort: use a desensitizing toothpaste (containing potassium nitrate) for two weeks before and after treatment, avoid very hot or cold foods for 48 hours post-treatment, and let your dentist know about any sensitivity history so they can adjust the gel concentration or application time.

What Foods and Drinks Should You Avoid After Whitening?

For the first 48 hours after treatment, your enamel is more porous and susceptible to staining. Following the "white diet" rule during this window helps lock in your results.

The 48-Hour White Diet Rule

Avoid: coffee, tea, red wine, cola, berries, tomato sauce, soy sauce, balsamic vinegar, curry, beets, and tobacco products. Enjoy: water, milk, white rice, chicken, fish, bananas, white cheese, yoghurt, and clear broths. After 48 hours, you can gradually return to your normal diet — but limiting staining substances long-term will help your results last.

How Can You Make Your Whitening Results Last?

Professional whitening results typically last one to three years depending on your habits. Here are practical ways to extend the life of your brighter smile:

Brush Twice Daily

Use a fluoride toothpaste and brush for at least two minutes, paying attention to the gum line where staining starts.

Floss Every Day

Flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth that contribute to discolouration over time.

Rinse After Staining Foods

Swish water in your mouth after consuming coffee, tea, or red wine to reduce staining contact time on enamel.

Use a Straw

Drinking dark beverages through a straw minimizes direct contact with the front surfaces of your teeth.

Schedule Touch-Ups

Use your custom take-home trays for periodic touch-ups every few months to maintain your shade between visits.

Keep Up with Cleanings

Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings remove surface stains before they accumulate.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums are good candidates for professional whitening. The treatment tends to work well for patients whose discolouration is primarily caused by extrinsic factors — foods, beverages, and tobacco — rather than intrinsic causes such as medication or dental trauma.

Whitening is not recommended for patients with untreated cavities, worn enamel, or active gum disease, as the bleaching agent can cause irritation. If you have dental restorations such as crowns, veneers, or bonding, those materials do not respond to whitening agents. If you are considering whitening alongside other cosmetic procedures, your dentist may recommend whitening first so that any new restorations can be matched to your lighter shade.

How Does Teeth Whitening Relate to Your Overall Oral Health?

While whitening is a cosmetic treatment, the process often encourages patients to take a closer look at their overall oral health. Before whitening, your dentist will conduct an examination that may identify issues you were not aware of — such as early decay, gum inflammation, or enamel erosion. Addressing these concerns before whitening not only produces better cosmetic results but also supports your long-term dental health.

Many patients find that investing in a brighter smile motivates them to maintain better oral hygiene habits. Cutting back on staining substances, brushing and flossing consistently, and keeping up with regular dental visits all help preserve your whitening results while also benefiting the health of your teeth and gums.

Looking for More Ways to Transform Your Smile?

Teeth whitening is often the first step in a broader cosmetic dentistry plan. If you have teeth that are chipped, uneven, or misaligned, you may want to explore complementary treatments:

  • Porcelain veneers — custom-made shells that cover the front surface of teeth for a dramatically improved appearance
  • Cosmetic bonding — tooth-coloured resin applied to repair chips, gaps, or minor imperfections
  • Invisalign — clear aligners to straighten teeth discreetly before or after whitening

Your dentist can help you build a treatment plan that combines whitening with other procedures for a comprehensive smile makeover.
