Dentures & Partials

A denture is a removable appliance that replaces a full arch of missing teeth, while a partial denture fills the gaps when some natural teeth remain. Both restore chewing and appearance, and both need periodic adjustment as the jaw changes shape over time. Orion Dental provides custom-fit dentures at our Scarborough and Milton, Ontario offices.

Understanding Dentures and Partial Dentures

Dentures are removable dental appliances that replace missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. They have been used for decades and continue to be a practical, accessible option for patients who have lost some or all of their teeth due to decay, gum disease, injury, or other causes.

At Orion Dental, we provide custom-fit dentures and partial dentures at our Scarborough and Milton offices. Each set is designed specifically for your mouth to provide a comfortable fit and a natural appearance.

What Types of Dentures Are Available?

There are several types of dentures, each suited to different needs and levels of tooth loss. Your dentist will help you determine which option is right for you.

Complete Dentures

Replace all teeth in one or both jaws. Made and placed after remaining teeth are removed and gums have healed (six to eight weeks).

Partial Dentures

Replace one or several missing teeth using clasps that attach to your remaining natural teeth. Prevent remaining teeth from shifting.

Immediate Dentures

Prepared in advance and placed the same day teeth are removed — so you are never without teeth. May need more adjustments during healing.

Implant-Supported Dentures

Snap onto dental implant posts in the jawbone for a secure fit. Removable for cleaning but stay firmly in place during eating and speaking.

Flexible Partials

Made from a thin, pliable nylon material that adapts to the contours of your mouth. More comfortable than rigid acrylic partials and require no metal clasps.

Precision Attachments

Partials with hidden internal attachments that connect to crowns on adjacent natural teeth — providing a secure, discreet fit without visible metal clasps.

Denture Care Tips

To keep your dentures in top condition: rinse them after every meal, brush daily with a soft denture brush and non-abrasive cleanser, and soak them overnight to maintain their shape. Handle dentures over a towel or basin in case of drops. Never use regular toothpaste — it is too abrasive and can scratch the surface, creating areas where bacteria accumulate. Continue to clean your gums and any remaining natural teeth with a soft toothbrush at each brushing.

What Does the Denture Process Involve?

Getting dentures is a multi-step process designed to achieve a comfortable, natural-looking fit. Here is what to expect:

1

Consultation & Impressions

Your dentist examines your mouth, takes digital X-rays, and discusses your options. Detailed impressions and measurements of your jaws are taken to create a precise model for your custom dentures.

2

Try-In Appointment

Before your final dentures are completed, you try on a wax model to evaluate fit, appearance, and bite. Tooth shape, size, and colour are confirmed at this stage, and any adjustments are made.

3

Final Fitting

Your completed dentures are delivered and fitted. Your dentist checks your bite and comfort, making chairside adjustments until you are satisfied with the result.

4

Adjustments & Follow-Up

It is normal to need one or more follow-up visits during the first few weeks to fine-tune the fit. Over time, relining may be needed as your gums and jawbone naturally change shape.

What Is It Like Living with Dentures?

Adjusting to new dentures takes time and patience. Most patients adapt within a few weeks. Here are some tips for the transition:

Eating

Start with soft foods cut into small pieces. Chew on both sides simultaneously to stabilize dentures. Gradually reintroduce firmer foods as you become comfortable.

Speaking

Practice by reading aloud or speaking slowly. Any lisping or difficulty with certain words usually resolves within a few weeks as your tongue and muscles adapt.

Comfort

Some initial soreness is normal. Contact our office for adjustments if sore spots develop — never try to adjust dentures yourself.

Confidence

Modern dentures look natural and fit well. Most people will not notice you are wearing them, helping you smile, speak, and eat with confidence.

How Do I Care for My Dentures?

Proper daily care helps your dentures last longer and keeps your mouth healthy.

  • Remove and rinse dentures after eating to remove food debris
  • Brush dentures daily with a soft-bristled denture brush and non-abrasive cleanser
  • Soak dentures overnight in water or a denture-soaking solution to keep them moist and maintain their shape
  • Rinse dentures thoroughly before putting them back in your mouth, especially if using a soaking solution
  • Handle dentures over a folded towel or a basin of water in case you drop them
  • Continue to brush your gums, tongue, and any remaining teeth with a soft toothbrush
  • Attend regular dental checkups so your dentist can examine your mouth and assess the fit of your dentures

Important: Never Use Regular Toothpaste on Dentures

Regular toothpaste is too abrasive for denture materials and can create tiny scratches where bacteria can build up. Always use a cleanser specifically designed for dentures, and never use bleach or hot water, which can warp the acrylic base.

When Should Dentures Be Replaced?

Even well-maintained dentures will eventually need to be replaced. The average lifespan of a set of dentures is five to ten years, though this varies depending on wear, changes to your jawbone, and how well they are cared for. Signs that your dentures may need replacement or adjustment include:

  • Dentures that slip, rock, or feel loose during eating or speaking
  • Visible wear, chips, or cracks in the denture teeth or base
  • Recurring sore spots on your gums
  • Changes in your facial appearance, such as a sunken look around the mouth
  • Difficulty chewing foods you previously managed comfortably

Regular dental visits allow your dentist to monitor the fit and condition of your dentures and recommend relining, rebasing, or replacement when needed.

What Are the Alternatives to Traditional Dentures?

Depending on your situation, your dentist may discuss alternatives or enhancements to traditional dentures:

Implant-Supported Dentures

Dental implants anchor the denture securely to your jawbone, significantly improving stability and chewing ability while preserving bone density.

Fixed Dental Bridges

If you have sufficient healthy teeth, a dental bridge can replace one or a few missing teeth as a fixed, non-removable option.

Individual Implant Crowns

For patients missing only a few teeth, individual implant-supported crowns are designed to closely replicate the look and feel of natural teeth.

Full-Mouth Reconstruction

For extensive tooth loss with complex needs, a comprehensive treatment plan may combine implants, crowns, and other restorations.

Your dentist will help you weigh the advantages and considerations of each option based on your oral health, jawbone condition, lifestyle, and budget. Learn more about dental implants, crowns and bridges, or full-mouth reconstruction.

Insurance & Payment

Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of denture treatment. We accept most major insurance providers and submit claims electronically on your behalf. For patients without insurance, we are happy to discuss payment options. Contact us to verify your specific coverage.
