Children's Dentistry

Children's dentistry is dental care adapted to growing mouths, from a first visit in the toddler years through the teenage years. It focuses on prevention, early detection of decay and bite problems, and helping children feel comfortable in the chair. Orion Dental welcomes children at our Scarborough and Milton, Ontario offices.

Why Is Early Dental Care Important for Children?

Good oral health habits begin in childhood. At Orion Dental, we provide comprehensive dental care for children at our Scarborough and Milton locations. Our team is experienced in working with young patients and understands the importance of creating a positive, comfortable environment for dental visits.

Oral health in childhood is closely connected to a child's overall health and development. Untreated cavities and dental infections can cause pain that interferes with eating, sleeping, and concentration at school. Children who have positive experiences at the dentist from an early age are more likely to continue attending regular appointments as adults, contributing to a lifetime of better oral and overall health.

What Happens at Your Child's First Dental Visit?

The Canadian Dental Association recommends that children visit the dentist within six months of their first tooth appearing, or by their first birthday. Early dental visits allow us to identify potential issues — such as early signs of decay, developmental concerns, or habits that may affect tooth alignment — before they become more significant.

1

Welcome & Familiarization

We introduce your child to the dental chair, instruments, and our team in a calm, playful manner so they feel safe and comfortable.

2

Gentle Oral Examination

The dentist examines your child's emerging teeth and gums, checking for signs of decay, developmental concerns, and habits that may affect alignment.

3

Professional Cleaning

A gentle cleaning removes any early plaque build-up. For very young children, this may be done with the child sitting in the parent's lap.

4

Fluoride Treatment

If appropriate, a quick fluoride varnish is applied to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities between visits.

5

Parent Guidance & Home Care Tips

We discuss brushing techniques, diet recommendations, teething, pacifier use, and answer all of your questions about your child's oral care at home.

Teething Tips for Parents

Teething can be uncomfortable for infants. Try gently rubbing your baby's gums with a clean finger or a cool, damp cloth. Chilled (not frozen) teething rings can also provide relief. Avoid teething gels containing benzocaine for children under two years old. If your child has a fever or seems unusually irritable during teething, contact your dentist or paediatrician.

What Dental Services Do Children Need?

We provide a full range of dental services for children at every stage of development, from infancy through the teen years.

Dental Exams & Cleanings

Regular checkups every six months to monitor development, check for cavities, and remove plaque and tartar build-up.

Digital X-Rays

Low-radiation digital imaging to see developing permanent teeth, root health, and areas of concern not visible to the eye.

Dental Sealants

Thin protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of molars to prevent cavities — quick and comfortable, with no drilling required.

Fluoride Treatments

Professional-strength fluoride gel, foam, or varnish to strengthen enamel and provide extra protection between visits.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Mercury-free composite fillings that blend with natural tooth colour, placed gently with local anaesthesia for comfort.

Orthodontic Monitoring

Ongoing assessment of bite and alignment as permanent teeth come in, with early referral for orthodontic treatment when needed.

Dental sealants are typically applied when the first permanent molars come in (around age six) and again when the second permanent molars appear (around age twelve). The application is quick, comfortable, and does not require drilling. Combined with regular dental checkups, sealants and fluoride treatments form a strong preventive foundation for your child's oral health.

How Can I Help My Child Build Good Oral Health Habits?

The foundation for lifelong oral health is built in childhood. Here are age-specific recommendations for parents:

For Infants and Toddlers

  • Clean your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth after feedings
  • Once teeth appear, brush them twice daily with a soft infant toothbrush and a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
  • Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice, which can cause early childhood cavities
  • Wean from the bottle by age one

For Preschool and School-Age Children

  • Supervise brushing until your child is seven or eight years old and has the dexterity to brush effectively on their own
  • Use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste once your child can spit reliably
  • Begin flossing when any two teeth touch each other
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks — choose water and healthy snacks instead
  • If your child plays sports, ask about a mouthguard to protect their teeth

For Teens

  • Continue brushing twice daily and flossing once daily
  • Discuss the effects of diet, smoking, and oral piercings on oral health
  • If your teen is undergoing Invisalign or orthodontic treatment, emphasize the importance of compliance with treatment instructions
  • Monitor wisdom teeth development with regular X-rays

When Should You Bring Your Child In Urgently?

Do not wait for the next scheduled visit if your child experiences a knocked-out or broken tooth, severe toothache or swelling, bleeding that does not stop after 10 minutes, a dental abscess (pimple on the gums), or an injury to the mouth, jaw, or face. Call our Scarborough office at 416-291-0306 or Milton office at 905-636-9770 for same-day guidance.

How Does Oral Health Affect My Child's Overall Well-Being?

Untreated cavities and dental infections can cause pain that interferes with eating, sleeping, and concentration at school. In some cases, dental infections can spread and lead to more serious health concerns. Children who develop gum disease or chronic oral infections may also avoid eating because of discomfort, which can affect the nutrition they get.

Beyond physical health, dental visits play a role in building your child's confidence with healthcare settings. At our Scarborough and Milton offices, we prioritize making each visit a calm, encouraging experience for young patients.

What Should I Expect at My Child's Dental Appointment?

Understanding what happens during a typical visit can help both parents and children feel more at ease. For younger children, the appointment usually begins with a gentle examination of the teeth, gums, and jaw. The dentist will look for signs of decay, monitor the development of incoming teeth, and check for any bite or alignment concerns. A professional cleaning is performed to remove plaque and tartar, followed by a fluoride treatment if appropriate.

For older children and teenagers, the visit may also include digital X-rays to assess the roots of teeth, developing permanent teeth, and the position of wisdom teeth. Your dentist will discuss any findings with you and recommend next steps, whether that involves preventive measures like sealants, restorative work such as fillings, or a referral for orthodontic evaluation. We encourage parents to ask questions at any point during the appointment.

Dental Anxiety in Children

Many children feel nervous about dental visits. Our team uses age-appropriate language, a show-tell-do approach, and a patient pace to help children feel at ease. For children with significant anxiety, we offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) as a safe, gentle sedation option. Let us know about any concerns when you book so we can plan accordingly.
